Veronica Castellana, the owner of RN MARKET LLC is a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and would like to share how she started her Legal Nurse Consulting Firm and how she started her Marketing Company. Here is her story of success.
“I was at the top of my life. I had it all. I was working my dream come true job in the Emergency Department of a hospital as a Registered Nurse. I noticed that I was developing rashes and having reactions but did not place them with my job. I had been to doctors and had been diagnosed with Rosacea, being allergic to the sun, possible Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and who knows what else.
During one of my shifts at work, I had just put on a pair of gloves to insert an IV line, when all of a sudden I felt itching going up my entire arm. I had to rip off the gloves. I contacted my supervisor and was told that I needed to be tested for a latex allergy. I could not believe that after so many years of working in the field of nursing, I would develop an allergy to latex. My job was gone and no position was available for me. I was on my own.
The bills were piling up and I needed an income. There was nowhere for me to work. I went from a great income to none. I was running out of ways to be a nurse until I found out about Legal Nurse Consulting. I could work out of my home and not in the hospital. I could see more of my children. I could still work as a nurse. I became certified as a Legal Nurse Consultant.
I started out by networking with attorneys, attending political functions and cocktail parties and making my own marketing materials and a Web site. I had a degree in Arts and also a Design degree from previous schooling. I had experience in marketing and sales and I had always been a freelance writer for various newspapers and magazines etc...
Those two degrees finally came in handy. I was rusty but had to start somewhere.
I started making materials for other nurses and getting involved in what would or would not work with attorneys. I noticed that I needed something that would work super quickly to get results. I started out by making a brochure and letter of introduction and still found it difficult to get clients. I spoke with other Legal Nurse Consultants and found they were having problems getting started too. At that time, I was helping to make their marketing items for them.
I decided to do a research study to see what would or would not bypass the gatekeepers. I watched attorney's open their mail for several weeks to see what I needed to make that would generate some business. I noticed that the #10 envelopes were being intercepted with the gatekeepers. The brochures that squeaked through were being looked at for 2-3 seconds by the attorneys and then tossed. I decided to make an item that would not get tossed and that would be viewed for a longer period of time; one that the attorney's wanted, not one that we as nurses wanted to give to them. I noticed what they did like to open. They liked large envelopes. They liked some color, bulleted items in a format style for easy viewing.
I also was receiving feedback from other Legal Nurse Consultants regarding how they were getting their business. I wanted to incorporate these two techniques together to form a format and style that would work for everyone. My hard work paid off. Our items that we developed bypass the gatekeepers and go right into the attorneys hands. The attorneys look at them for 8 seconds or more!!! They generate business.
I give thanks to those nurses who gave me so much feedback in the beginning. Between my mistakes and theirs, we were able to come up with a modernized method of marketing that generates business for Legal Nurse Consultants and others in the healthcare field starting their own business. With these items, my Legal Nurse Consulting business skyrocketed!!! I now have subcontractors all over the country that have benefited by working with my LNC Firm. It pays my bills and then some!!! Those who purchased my products now had clients too!!!

We teach marketing at Louisiana State University and others throughout the United States. We have speaking engagements all over the country and also have a marketing column in a nationwide nursing journal.
We are having our own "MARKET FOR SUCCESS" conference in February at the
Waldorf Astoria hotel in a suite with Champagne. There will only be a total
of ten people at that seminar.
