Medico-Legal Implications of Electronic Medical Records

Allyson Kayton obtained her BSN and MSN from Stony Brook University, New York. Allyson is a Board Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. She also completed her ALNC with RN Market in July 2008. She is the owner of Kayton & Associates, Medical Legal Consulting, Inc. founded in August 2008. Allyson is married, and the mother of three boys ages 21, 15, and 8. She currently works as a neonatal nurse practitioner and does air and ground transport with Kidz Medical Group in Miami, Florida.

Presentation Objectives:

•	Discuss the contents and definition of the legal health record and be able to differentiate between Electronic Health Record and Electronic Medical Record.
•	Review the HIPAA Security Rule and goals for electronic medical records
•	Identify the differences of ESI from Federal to State Court and evaluate how electronic medical records can reduce medical malpractice risk and the medical legal risk management benefits, pitfalls and safeguards
